Top 10 Reasons to Believe in God

What’s the Alternative?

This is my favourite reason.

Believe in nothing.

Death is the end.

There is no higher force at play to support you.

How does that work out for people?

Some are very rich.

Some are very evil.

Some are just bored.

Some are lonely.

All have a big God-shaped hole in their life.

Here are 10 more reasons that apologists put forward:

1. Personal Experience

Many people have had direct experiences of God.

They feel his presence.

Derek Prince underwent a profound awakening in 1941 whilst fighting in Word War II when Jesus appeared to him.

Millions of Muslims in Iran have had dreams in which Jesus appears to them.

Many people receive answer to prayer in such a profound way they know God exists.

And of course, direct experience of miracles.

Paul on the road to Damascus is the most dramatic example in the Bible of God appearing:

As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied.

ACTS 9: 3-5

2. The Design Argument

This argument suggests that the complexity and order of the universe point to an intelligent designer, much like a complex machine implies an intelligent designer.

How can this marvellous universe be by accident?

3. Moral Argument

Our sense of morality, our innate understanding of right and wrong, comes from a divine source.

C S Lewis is clear on this point. Our conscience comes from God.

4. Our Desire for Meaning and Purpose

Belief in God provides a framework for understanding life’s purpose, giving life meaning and a sense of direction.

Otherwise people are lost.

Belief in self is not good enough.

5. Hope and Comfort

Belief in God offers hope in the face of suffering, comfort in times of grief, and the promise of eternal life.

How often do people turn to prayer when their life is desperate?

How often do you hear people say:

“All we can do is pray”?

6. Community and Belonging

Religious communities provide a sense of belonging and support, fostering relationships and a shared sense of purpose.

Fellowship in Christ.

God made us to be social and to be together in our love of him.

7. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a cornerstone of faith.

Evidence of God’s power and the promise of eternal life.

Many people have sought to disprove the resurrection and come away firm believers and full of faith.

The most successful lawyer in the world, an atheist was asked to turn his evidential skills to the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

His conclusion?

I say unequivocally that the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ is so overwhelming that it compels acceptance by proof which leaves absolutely no room for doubt.”

SIR LIONEL LUCKHOO

8. The Fulfilment of Prophesy

The fulfilment of prophecies found in the Bible, provides evidence of God’s existence and plan.

Jesus came to fulfil the law.

9. The inherent longing for the Divine

We have an innate spiritual longing for something greater than ourselves, a longing that can only be fulfilled by a relationship with God.

10. The testimony of others

Hearing the testimonies of others who have experienced God’s love and grace can be a powerful source of faith.

There were 100s who saw the resurrected Christ.

So many Christian martyrs have died for Christ.

Faith of others is overwhelming and compelling.

Let us pray:

FATHER GOD PLEASE REVEAL YOURSELF TO THOSE WHO DO NOT HAVE THE BENEFIT OF YOUR GRACE. GIVE THEM FAITH LORD IN YOUR LOVE AND POWER. IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME WE PRAY. AMEN

  1. Sorry, no “god shaped hole” here. Christians do love to make that up so they can convince themselves that everyone “really” agrees with them. And funny how this god doesn’t even support its followers so your claims it does are rather pitiful. Christians die, suffer, etc just like everyone else. No afterlife for your god to make up for its failure.

    1. Personal experience: All theists claim to have this with their various religions/gods, and each doesn’t believe the others. All you have is baseless claims.

    2. design – Every theist claims their god is the creator, and not one of you can show this is true. You all have the problem that your god is evidently incompetent or malicious since yuor god has managed to make the sun give us cancer, DNA to fail often and horribly, and the human body to guarantee that thousands of humans choke to death every year.

You’ll likely claim that the “fall” changed things which means you can’t see what your god supposedly really intended.

    3. Moral argument – Christian morality is demosntrably subjective, with each inventing a list of morals they claim their god wants, and yet the poor dears can’t show that their god merely exists, much less agrees with them. They also have the problem that they must insist that their god doesn’t have to follow these supposedly “objective” morals since they have to invent excuses why it is okay for this god to commit genocide, to kill people for the actions of others, etc. This makes their morality subjective to who someone is. it also shows their morality is little moreo than might equals right.

    4. meaning and purpose – Again, all theists makes the same claims and claim each other are wrong. Happily, humans make our own meaning and purpose for our selves and others. No god needed, and theists can’t even agree on what this “meaning and purpose” is.

    5. hope and comfort – curious how your god does nothing, so any hope is in vain. And anyone who whines that “all we can do is pray” is a failure since humans can always do something. I never turn to prayer when things are desperate since prayers are never answered, despite the promises of theists.

    6. Community and belonging – any religion/cult has that.

    7. resurrection – no evidence for that at all, just storiesin your bible. Nice lies about the most famous lawyer in the world”, which you have no name for and you try to use an appeal to authority fallacy to claim that since its a lawyer, we should believe baseless nonsense.

    8. fulfillment of prophecy – no evidence for that either, just stories claiming prophecies and stories claiming they were fulfilled.

    9. inherent longing for the divine – like the “god hole” no evidence for this either, just another lie told by theists to try to convince themselves everyone really agrees with them. We do not.

    10. testimony – again, all religions/ cults claim testimony, and all you have are stories of testimony, no actual witnesses, etc. Curious how Paul’s 500 simply vanish, never to be heard from again.

you and your religion are quite the frauds, Elle.

      1. Haha, that is funny. You are right of course, My life is blessed. I did not claim my life was tough… just that it could be easier… Maybe God is using you to convince me I need to return to my theological studies. Thank you.

  2. BTW, I’ve had literally hundreds of christains of all versions praying for me to agree with them over the last 30+ years. You’ve all been complete failures, despite the promises in your bible. What’s wrong? Is it that your god loves me as I am? that your god doesn’t htink any of you are true believers? Or is it that your god doesn’t exist?

    Your choice.

      1. Curious how christains can’t agree if their god loves everyone or not. Some claim that this god has unconditional love for everyone and wants everyone saved, which is indicated in the story about the lost sheep. Then, some claim that this god doesn’t love everyone and has already chosen who it will allow to accepet it, damning the rest for no fault of their own.

So are you a calvinist? And why should I find hat version of christianity any better than the rest?

      2. I am a Catholic. My beliefs are based upon reading the Bible and my own spiritual journey not church dogma. The older I get the more I am drawn to the beauty and truth of the Catholic mass, the contemplative transcendence of the rosary and the emotional overload of the Lord’s prayer.

      3. Like all christians, you claim your beliefs are based on reading the bible and your own spiritual journey, so that you make up what yuo want and ignore the rest.

Every christian claims to to have the only right version, and strangely enough, not one self-professed christian can show that is true or can do what jesus promised to his followers. The billions of different kinds of christians seem to have quite a problem.

      4. It is wonderful that each Christian’s spiritual journey is individual and of course it is based upon the Bible and what God reveals to them. The only problem is seen by those seeking to undermine faith. The fact that billions of Christians rely on Jesus as their Saviour is testament to God’s supernatural power. For those who choose a different path… so be it… we are to spread the Good News not force it upon those who are determined in their unbelief. As Jesus instructed… brush the dust from your feet and move on.
