What is a lukewarm Christian?
Is this Biblical?
Yes, Jesus condemned lukewarm Christians.
Jesus described lukewarm Christians
He answers directly:
“Because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
REVELATION 3:16
This is not symbolic.
It is a warning.
SPIRITUAL – CONTEXT
Jesus spoke this to the church in Laodicea…
A wealthy city with a lukewarm water supply…
Neither cold and refreshing.
Nor hot and healing.
He used what they knew…
To expose what they had become.
SPIRITUAL – WHAT DOES LUKEWARM MEAN?
Lukewarmness means spiritual indifference.
Not fully surrendered…
Not openly rebellious.
Just…
Passive.
Comfortable.
Unmoved.
SPIRITUAL – WHY IS GOD DISPLEASED?
God hates lukewarmness…
Because it misrepresents him.
It has no power…
No conviction…
No purpose.
It is not refreshing to others.
It is not a light in the darkness.
“If salt loses its saltiness… it is no longer good for anything.”
MATTHEW 5:13
SPIRITUAL – CLUES YOU ARE LUKEWARM
- You are content without God’s presence
No desire to pray… no hunger for his Word. - You don’t share the Gospel
You blend in. You don’t speak truth. - You twist Scripture
You justify your preferences by bending God’s Word. - You don’t know your true condition
You assume all is well… but Jesus is outside the door (Revelation 3:20). - You want forgiveness without repentance
You want to be saved from consequences, not sin. - You prioritise the world over God
Worldly success matters more than spiritual obedience. - You make excuses instead of repenting
You rationalise sin instead of confessing it. - You lack spiritual fruit
No growth. No change. No evidence. - You fear people more than God
You seek their approval… not his.
SPIRITUAL – TEST YOURSELF
How do you rate your own walk?
- Kind?
- Humble?
- Obedient?
- Loving?
- Holy?
- Childlike?
- Enthusiastic for God?
Where are you compromising?
Where are you silent?
Where do you resist conviction?
SPIRITUAL – PERSONAL REFLECTION
Ask yourself…
What part of the Bible do I ignore?
Where have I reshaped truth to fit comfort?
“For the time will come wheb people will not endure sound teaching… but gather teachers ti suit their own passions.”
2 TIMOTHY 4:3
My example…
Modest dressing.
I criticised it as outdated… frumpy.
But would I be content to stand before Jesus… in what I wear?
SPIRITUAL – THE CALL TO REPENT
“So because you are lukewarm… I will spit you out.”
REVELATION 3:16
This is not passive rejection…
It is active disgust.
Jesus is not indifferent toward indifference.
SPIRITUAL – THE HOPE
Jesus doesn’t end with rejection.
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”
REVELATION 3:16
Repentance is always the way back.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive…”
1 JOHN 1:19
SPIRITUAL – FINAL CHARGE
Stop blending in.
Be salt.
Be light.
Let your life preach louder than your words.
LET US PRAY
OH GOD WE CRY OUT TO YOU TO SEIZE OUR HEARTS AND SQUEEZE THEM SO THEY OVERFLOW WITH LOVE FOR YOU. LET THIS OVERWHELMING LOVE INSPIRE AND DIRECT OUR ACTS. SO THAT WE MAY BEAR FRUITS AS A TRUE DISCIPLE. BANISH ANY LUKEWARMNESS FROM OUR HEARTS. IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME WE PRAY. AMEN
