This is the final post on a series of three, detailing why we fear God.
In the first post we saw that the fear of God supplies:
Knowledge.
Wisdom.
Understanding.
In the second post we heard that the fear of God requires:
Loyalty.
Obedience.
Humility. And…
Eternal beliefs.
Do you believe the fear of God is necessary yet?
Do you accept that the fear of God is a good thing?
God designed everything for ultimate good.
God decided that we need to fear him.
How does this benefit us?
Confidence
Fear of God gives us confidence in his power and support.
Gives us faith in his goodness and kindness towards us.
As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
PSALM 103:13
Because we know God loves us eternally, we can trust that he will treat us fairly and compassionately.
We fear God’s power over us but rely on his ultimate compassion towards us.
Without fear of the possible consequences, we treat God with contempt and disdain, assuming God will always give way.
But God will not be mocked.
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.
GALATIANS 6:7-8
Delight
We can delight in God’s holiness.
His majesty.
His presence.
His righteousness.
His power.
His mercy.
His love.
His ultimate support.
So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
HEBREWS 13:6
Avoiding poor decisions
The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.
PROVERBS 8:13
If we fear God… we will be saved from making poor decisions that go against his will and wisdom.
We are to obey his commandments.
Why?
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
JEREMIAH 29:11
God wants what is best for us.
For our ultimate good.
We don’t have God’s wisdom and understanding but we must have faith and trust in the Lord that he knows best.
I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me.
JEREMIAH 32:40
The more we fear God, the less we sin.
God has put the fear of him in our hearts to protect us from sin.
Everything God does is for our ultimate good.
Let us pray:
FATHER GOD WE THANK YOU FOR OUR LIVES, NOW AND FOR ETERNITY. WE PRAY THAT YOU PROTECT AND GUIDE US IN YOUR PATH IN EVERY ACTION WE TAKE, EVERY THOUGHT THAT WE HAVE AND EVERY WORD THAT WE SPEAK. MAY WE SEEK TO GLORIFY YOUR NAME IN EVERYTHING. IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME WE PRAY. AMEN.
